CHIN 101: Mandarin for Beginner I (Non-Heritage)

A beginner level Mandarin Chinese course for students who have little or no previous Chinese experience. This course is designed to equip learners’ with basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Mandarin Chinese through interactive classroom activities, language lab and online practices as well as exploring some key components of Chinese culture and customs.

CHIN 102: Mandarin for Beginner II (Non-Heritage)

CHIN 102 is a continuation of CHIN 101 for students who have taken CHIN 101 or equivalent. The course is designed to further equip students with communicative language skills for listening, speaking, reading and writing in Mandarin Chinese in real life Mandarin speaking environment. Students will learn about 250 more Chinese characters for reading and writing.

CHIN 106: Chinese Level 1 (Heritage) – Part 1

This course in Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin) is designed for heritage students (i.e. those who have some prior background in speaking any variety of Chinese, usually in a home or family context, but little experience with writing), and focuses on developing Chinese literacy skills, competence in using different oral and written registers, and familiarity with Chinese discourses and social practices.

CHIN 107: Chinese Level 1 (Heritage) – Part 2

This course in Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin) for heritage students is a continuation of CHIN 106, and builds on the fundamentals established in that course to help students develop their written and oral literacy, familiarity with a wide variety of genres, and ability to participate in high level discourse.

CHIN 201: Mandarin Chinese Level II Part I

CHIN 201, Level 1 Part 2, is a continuation of Mandarin Chinese Level 1 Part 1 for non-heritage students. This course is designed for students who have completed CHIN 101 and 102 or equivalent. CHIN 201 will continue to help students building a solid foundation of four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing of Chinese language in an interactive and communicative learning environment. The course will cover Lesson 11- Lesson 15 in Textbook Integrated Chinese Level 1 Part 2.

Prerequisites: CHIN 101, CHIN 102 or equivalent.

CHIN 202: Mandarin Chinese Level II Part II

CHIN 202 is a continuation of CHIN 201 for non-heritage students. This course will continue to strengthen four skills’ training: listening, speaking, reading and writing of Chinese language in an interactive and communicative learning environment. By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to communicate in many real-life situations in a Mandarin-speaking environment with confidence and accuracy. The course will cover Lesson 16-Lesson 20 in Textbook Integrated Chinese Level 1 Part 2.

Prerequisites: CHIN 201 or equivalent.
