LAST 100: Introduction to Latin American History and Society
This course offers an historical overview of Latin America from the pre-conquest civilizations to the present, and a sociological view on economic, ethnic and gender inequality, with a focus on the 20th and 21st centuries.
LAST 251: Modern Central America: Land of Corn, Coffee & Conflict
Broad overview of Central America followed by country-by-country case studies of Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador. The course examines the role of the American government, military dictatorships, guerilla wars and the peace process of all three countries. The course includes a service-learning experience such as volunteering for a non-governmental organization in Vancouver or volunteering at an orphanage in Guatemala.
