BIO
The Honourable Yonah Martin is a Conservative Senator from British Columbia, appointed in 2009 by The Right Hon. Stephen Harper. She is the first Canadian of Korean descent in the Senate and the first Korean-Canadian parliamentarian in Canadian history.
Senator Martin serves as Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (since 2015) and previously held roles as Deputy Leader of the Government (2013-2015) and Deputy Whip (2011-2013). She co-chairs the Canada Korea Inter-Parliamentary Group; and her Senate Motions were unanimously adopted to recognize June as Deafblind Awareness Month (2016) and October as Korean Heritage Month (2024).
Her legislative achievements include the Korean War Veterans Day Act (2013), advancing GST/HST exemptions for traditional Chinese medicine (2014), and helping finalize the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement (2016).
Born in Seoul, South Korea, she immigrated to Canada in 1972 and built a 21-year teaching career after earning a Bachelor of Education and a Master of Education from UBC. She co-founded the C3 Korean Canadian Society and remains its Honorary Patron, alongside serving on multiple boards and councils.
Recognized for her community service, Senator Martin has received numerous honors, including the Order of Civil Merit Moran Medal (2009), Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012), and UBC’s Education 100 Alumni distinction (2014).
